 Napoleon did a lot to change France.  He ended the unstable revolution and provided a new, stable government.  He also was involved in many military campaigns.  Over all, he was so-so, but he did provide an end to the bloody revolution that ended up in a long killing spree for power.  The revolution certainly ended a long way from liberty, equality, and fraternity.

		+	To what extent had life improved for members of the Third Estate as a result of the 1789 Revolution by 1791?
		+	The French Revolution was a period of political and social upheaval in the history of France and it also affected Europe as a whole. Many changes took place that affected all the citizens of France including the nobles and clergy. The changes that took place were based on the theory of equality for all. Many things contributed to the French revolution. Many of them were mistakes made by the King. Some made life better for the Third Estate however some made it much worse. The Third estate included landless labourers who worked for the peasants. And at the higher end of the Third Estate there were the Middle classes. Before the Revolution began in 1789 the King ruled the country and claimed much of the power. However the people were unhappy with this because they did not believe that King Louis XVI was doing his job to the best of his ability. They were led to believe that Marie Antoinette was spending all of the taxes which they had paid to the government. They did not think that the King was fulfilling his basic duties to the country for example: Many people were starving or going hungry. There was widespread famine and Malnutrition also there was a high level of unemployment and the price of the food had risen enormously. He had also not provided an heir even though he was ageing rapidly.

		+	Life improved by a great amount for the Third estate during the French revolution. These are the ways in which it improved: On the 20th August 1789 the Declaration of the Rights of man. This was where the National assembly took over from the King and introduced a new way or thinking. This was equality for everyone… ‘ Men are born and remain free and equal in rights… these rights are liberty, property, security and resistance to oppression… liberty is being able to do whatever does not harm others… The law should express the will of the people… Every citizen can talk, write and publish freely unless this liberty is abused in a way which breaks the law.’ The feudal system was abolished on the 4th April 1789. This meant that taxes would be less discriminative and they were based on ability to pay. It also meant that the third estate would have more political and social rights. They could vote for Judges, deputies, Tax collectors and priests. In the summer of 1789 the officials were chosen by the people which gave more political rights. On the 5-6 October the King was taken to Paris so that the people could keep an eye on him. There were also many church reforms which improved life for the Third Estate these were, Priests were elected and paid by the state, The church tax was abolished therefore the taxes went down even more. Church lands were sold to the people.

The supplies of food became short therefore increasing the problem of malnutrition. The women were still treated poorly and there had been no reforms that improved the standard of living for them for example they could not vote or be educated. The landless levellers did not get a vote either this was due to the fact that they did not pay their taxes so they could not vote. This meant that life did not improve for them. Before the French revolution there was an economic slump which was also a main reason for the malnutrition. The population had risen by 7 million and around 90% of these belonged to the Third Estate.
